Pre Wedding Rituals of Bengali Wedding

India is a land of regions and cultures. Each region has set own rituals for marriages as well as other occasions. The diversity of unique traditions and colors makes our beautiful country. Wedding rituals of every region are quite different from each other, but the sense of respect offered to traditions and rich spiritual significance in every culture is the same. 

Bengali Matrimony is a mixture of many beautiful traditional and modern rituals. Like the other region wedding, Bengali wedding is also celebrated with full of joy. Today we share only Pre-Wedding Rituals of Bengali ceremony:

Adan Pradan

After the approval of the couple as a life partner, their families get together along with their priest to study their horoscope to fix the marriage date. After fixing the date, both families generally, exchange gifts. This ceremony is done many months ago.

Paka Katha

It is a formal meeting of elders between the bride’s & groom’s family members to formally agree on the different factors of the marriage.

Aiburobhat

This is shower ceremony and performs at the bride and groom’s house in the evening or night before a wedding day evenly. The importance of Aiburobhat is that it is the last meal to serve for the bride and groom before starting the new life. The served food contains many delicious vegs. and nonveg. such as rice, fish, bread and etc.

Sankha Porano

In this tradition, the bride is made to wear bangles which are made from conch shells. It is traditional Bengali symbols of marital bliss.

Jol Sowa

It is body bath, on the morning of the wedding day, mother of bride and family married women’s accompanied to fill the brass pitcher. This water is used to bath the bride after the Gaye Holud ceremony. This ceremony is also performed at the groom’s house in the same way.

Dodhi Mangal

It is the last meal of the wedding day for the bride and groom as they would have to fast until the wedding rituals are not completed.

Birddhi Puja

The groom’s father and other male members chanted Sanskrit hymns and offering the past seven generations of paternal ancestor to appease their souls and seek their blessings. This ceremony is also performed at the bride’s families in the same respective way.

Gaye Holud and Tattwa

Then family’s women prepare a turmeric paste which is made from the fresh turmeric and mustard oil. Grooms Mother and other married women applied this paste to grooms’ body and then the groom bath with water procured in the morning. The left turmeric paste is sent to the bride’s house with the simple outfit which is worn by the bride during this ceremony. It is assumed that the turmeric bath removes all impurities or evils.
